O C E A N I C
“Light I remember, darkness I remember. Then it was all in front of me, a million wishes, a million lives. I saw them all. Behind their shutters. But how many of them you can live and how to choose. And if I always said I wanted you beside me, there is no space left for anyone inside me. Neither for me -there is no place left. And what moves inside here is now distorting. A melody like silence, I remember. Two more breaths, long, last breaths. Then only me left. . .”
At the last performance of the company The Face of Men Dancetheatre Co, “Oceanic”, the two performers create images that reflect unconscious areas of the imaginary, exploring the relationship with the self, the identity, the reminiscence of the “oceanic state”, the choice distinction and the illusion than can be hidden in it, the longing of every human being for the “lost paradise” that leads to self-entrapment and to alienation, being at the same time the source of the human perseverance for life and evolution.
The central place in the narrative is occupied by the performers' clothes and their treatment as symbols, sometimes of the artificial, of what is “worn” by the external environment, sometimes of the experience of choice and the need of self-identification, leading to the painful alienation from the real nature of the self. The effort to get rid of the artificial pieces and reconnect with the authentic ones in order to be able to experience the oceanic feeling is the thread that runs through the performance.
The “place” of the narrative is the interior of the house. The first social environment where the individual is asked to play roles, where the familiar transmutes into unfamiliar.
“Oceanic” is a performance about the human immensity, but also about constraints, about the hidden and the profoundly intimate which, in a very odd but appealing manner, concerns us all.
